Winchester Residence
From the city to the suburbs – we appreciate repeat clients! This family moved from our South End Triplex to a c.1910’s late Victorian that had been renovated by a local contractor prior to purchase. To fit the family’s needs, we were tasked with several interventions, with the result being an integrated flow of spaces on the first level of the home and its adjacent outdoor areas. The kitchen/dining space was a 30’ long room at the rear of the house that required definition. To subdivide the space while maintaining visual continuity, we introduced a glazing wall to create an office at one end, extended the kitchen into the dining area (including a bar with nitro cold brew and beer kegerators) in the middle, and at the other end we cohesively integrated a pantry area. Finishes were kept light and clean to brighten the space. The adjacent living area was reconfigured to provide an optimal seating arrangement around an updated fireplace and TV, and one wall was reduced to half-height to visually connect the spaces, allowing a view from the front door to the new office and dining area. On the exterior, two interventions upgraded the outdoor experience. The concrete block garage was re-sided with composite decking for a more aesthetically pleasing and modern look. Given the southern exposure of their back yard, we removed two functionally basic stairs and designed a new full-width deck to provide enjoyment in the hottest months. The deck seamlessly integrates with the character of the house and includes fans and integrated patio heaters that were designed and placed with respect to the desired furniture layout, allowing them to extend their outdoor time to three seasons.
